During the summer term St. Michael’s College Year 10 pupils had been offered the opportunity to take part in a prestigious International Robotic Competition that was hosted in Belfast by SENTINUS and sponsored by the Chinese Government and leading N.Ireland businesses such as Bombardier. The competition involved having to either remote control or program their own robots which were designed using LEGO Mindstorms kit; each one worth £500.00 to our school.
One of the judges from the competition on the day, Mr Howard Mc IIwane from Bombardier Aerospace in Belfast who attended the school to present the boys with their prizes.
Howard, acknowledged the brilliance of four young men who not only over the course of June and right up to the day of competition on the 19th July demonstrated great endeavour and commitment but managed to come away with much more on the day.
Firstly, Líam Maguire and Lonán Mc Guigan who both came third in their category. Whereas Eoin Magee and Donald Joy managed to go a step further with both successful in coming first in their category whilst also coming away with a prize of £200-00.
Mr Connor Mc Barron (Technology & Design HOD) outlined that our present Year 10’s would have the same opportunity to complete at this International competition later on in the year during the third term.
Whilst Year 9, in the coming weeks will be able to qualify to be part of one of two teams that he will be organised to enter a regional Robotic competition in February followed by the National competition in March over at the NEC in Birmingham.
