Learning Support
Learning Support at St Michael’s offers compassionate, thoughtful and personalised support that helps every pupil feel understood, valued and ready to learn. We work closely with families, teachers and external professionals to make sure each young person receives the right help at the right time. Our goal is to create a school where every pupil can thrive and feel proud of who they are.

Learning Support at a glance

We start with effective classroom teaching for all pupils. When extra intervention is needed, we offer small group and one to one support, practical strategies in class and access to specialist advice. We work closely with families at every step.
Our Team

Learning Support is led by a dedicated and experienced team:

-
Mrs T O’Donoghue – Learning Support Coordinator

Mrs J Lavelle – Literacy Support Coordinator

Our classroom assistants play a vital part in school life. Our large team works alongside teachers every day and provides caring, consistent and practical support that helps pupils grow in independence, confidence and resilience.
How We Support Pupils

Quality First Teaching is at the heart of everything we do. When a pupil needs something extra, we act early to provide the right support. A Personal Learning Plan sets clear, achievable targets and is reviewed with families.
Support may include:
-
small group sessions
-
one to one teaching support
-
one to one classroom assistant support
-
personalised strategies designed to help each young person feel secure and able to succeed

Where needed, we assess and arrange exam access arrangements such as extra time, a reader, a scribe or use of assistive technology.

We focus on independence, engagement and wellbeing throughout the school day.

Learning Programmes

We offer a range of practical and engaging programmes to help pupils build their core skills and develop confidence.
Support may include:
-
Literacy support
-
Numeracy support
-
Social skills
-
Emotional Wellbeing

Every programme is planned around assessed needs and reviewed regularly with pupils and families so progress is understood and celebrated.
The Zone

The Zone is our dedicated regulation space, designed to give pupils a calm and nurturing place to reset, reflect and reconnect with their learning. Pupils can access sensory tools, calming activities and support from trained staff. The principles of the Zones of Regulation are woven into our daily practice so pupils learn skills that help them manage their emotions throughout the day.

Clubs at Break and Lunch

We offer safe and welcoming clubs during break and lunch to support friendships, positive social interaction and emotional regulation. Through play, creativity and movement, pupils have space to enjoy themselves, build confidence and feel part of a supportive school community.
How to Get Support

If you have a concern about your child’s learning or wellbeing, please speak with their class teacher or form tutor, or contact the Learning Support team directly. We will always listen, agree next steps with you and stay in close communication as we support your child together.
