St. Michael’s College represent Northern Ireland in the IET First Lego League Robotics UK and Ireland Finals
A team of budding engineers from St. Michael’s College has won the University of Ulster, IET First Lego League Robotics competition which took place on 23rd January in Magee College, Derry.
The team of year 8 and year 10 students mentored by their teacher, Mrs Donnelly, came away with the judges’ award for the best robot design as well as winning the overall competition as the best performing team over the three categories: robot performance, presentation and core values.
The FIRST LEGO League robotics competition is a global science and technology challenge designed to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for future careers. The St. Michael’s students worked hard to explore the given topic, ‘Into Orbit’ and competed against several other schools before winning the title. The students competed in the four competition elements:
Research, design and present a solution to a space related problem,
Design, build and program an autonomous Lego robot to solve a series of missions.
Demonstrated the core values throughout the competition.
The competition is held as a celebration of STEM education, providing student teams the opportunity to share their robotics projects and compete and learn within a fun environment.
The students are now making their final preparations for the UK and Ireland finals, to take place in Bristol on 16th February.
