The Mass for the official opening of the school year was held in St. Michael’s Church Enniskillen on Friday Sept 26, 20008. The 720 students of the College, their teachers, many parents and friends of St. Michael’s attended. The Mass was concelebrated by the school chaplain, Canon Macartan McQuaid and a past pupil, Fr Aodhan McCrystal SMA.
Many staff and students took part in the prayers, readings and especially in the music of the Mass.
The Liturgy was greatly enhanced by the singing of the 70-strong College Choir under the direction of Mrs Grainne Hanratty with organist Miss Emily McMeel, the repertoire of the College Brass Band under the direction of Mr Bob Quick and the College Traditional Group under the direction of Mr Pat McCabe.
In his homily Fr McQuaid encouraged the students to adhere firmly and gladly to the two basic commandments of Jesus:
to show love of God through personal prayer and regular community celebration of the Mass and to show love of people through qualities of respect, honesty, kindness and helpfulness. He complimented them on the many clear signs of faith evident in their lives. He asked them to consider how they could be leaders in encouraging people in their own age-group to commit to following the way of Jesus.
